To: Sharks Fans

Hey, your team just beat last year's Stanley Cup Finals participants! Your top line is dominant, your young guys are doing great, and Dan Boyle has been a great acquisition so far. You guys are celebrating, right? Right?

[Update from anonymous Battle of California Blogger] Yes.

Touche. The joy is gone.

Every great win come with a "yeah, but"* until this team breaks through to the Finals.

*yeah, but can they do it in the playoffs.

It really sucks that everything is about the Sharks and Ducks because the Kings are just awful. I feel like we're really left out here. But at least the Kings are 1-0-0 against Anaheim this year. POSITIVITY!*

*Sorry, Sleek, but I think we Kings fans need to borrow/steal your "motto".

Hey, no worries there. It's certainly available for any fan who needs a bright side story.

Also useful for discussing world politics, the economy, and the housing market. Positivity!

Dear Sharks/Ducks,

We hate you.

Why are you so good?

Get the hell out of our division.

Love,

Don't respond. It's a trap.

I think they're all holding their breath until mid-May; after all, they've only made it out of the second round once in their team history, and that was four years ago now.

Yeah, I had a drink or four last night. Celebrating away, how is your year going?

And about "yeah but", yeah but I would trade my left nut to have faster, cheaper, younger, smarter, better, longer Craig Rivet back and be rid of Rob "stupid penalty" Blake.

If you really hate SJ fans you can start gloating now about Blake. That is some serious revenge. I don't care for the Kings particularly, but I wouldn't wish Blake on anyone, at least not for 5 million dollars.

At least the Sharks were able to win comfortably. The Kings gave it away, and the Ducks nearly did.

Dear Dallas Stars,

If you're going to insist on being two time zones away from the Pacific Ocean, please don't insinuate ownership of the Pacific division.

I'd say more, but it's probably past your bedtime already.

I'm sorry you hate us Sharks fans. I did have a great time at the game last night and yes, it was made even sweeter that I could yell happy "Shark-thoughts" toward the annoying Wings fan sitting next to us.

To those who keep throwing the "playoffs" stuff out, come on, you'll have plenty of time to throw that in our faces after the first of the year. Let us savor a little success under the new coach for a bit.

(Oh yeah - thanks Ducks for wearing them down the night before).

Don't forget the long summer, also! :)

I was pessimistic about this season because I'm always pessimistic about anything I care about. It helps keep from being hurt. That's why I love being wrong. And so far, I've been wrong and very happy about that.

But I wasn't wrong about Rob Blake being a mistake. Again, I'd love to be wrong about him, too, but my pessimism about him has much less to do with self-preservation as it has to do with the fact that he sucks.

It's all about the system. The system is allowing the sharks to dominate. So far, every shark has the system running through their veins. Systematically, the system can't fail. I've bought into the system, and i think the players, announcers, coaches, and all of the fans like the system too.

system. SYSTEM.

For all the Sharks fans bitching about Blake, I say, "scoreboard." We're 9-2 with that boat anchor, dragging us down. He takes bad penalties, sure, but he also has helped with our point play, and seems to be helping Ehrhoff continue his evolution from late last year.

Take the good with the bad. We have a strong enough team to allow his positives to outweigh his negatives, at least right now (something the Kings didn't have the luxury of last year).

Well said, Ian. Blake sucks, yeah, but the rest of the team is making up for his slack. On a good team like the Sharks, he's a minor inconvenience; on a black hole of suck like last year's Kings, he's just adding to the problem.

...hey, positivity does work!

I'm hoping you're not being sarcastic here, but it's basically true. A player like Blake on a bad defensive team with a bad goalie mean a lot of power-plays and goals against due to stupid interference calls and giveaways, etc. I'm sure the Sharks brass were aware of his tendencies when they signed him, but thought the supporting cast would minimize his mistakes and take advantage of his skills.

I positively hate that idea.

A player with a good slap shot and a propensity for stupid penalties doesn't become better or worse depending on which team he's playing for. Rob Blake's just as poor on your team as he was on ours.

We could go around and around on this, but let's just say that I strongly disagree with the idea that a player's worth is unrelated to the team he's on.

ahem
Martin LaPointe
Bobby Holik
Teemu Selanne
Jaromir Jagr
Dany Heatley
Petr Sekora
...
ahem

Sure, there's relativity, but it's still perfectly reasonable that a person can still suck in two sets of circumstances.

You're right on the larger point, of course. What really matters is the 9-2, plus the positive aspects of the Sharks' overall play. Bad contracts can be hidden on good teams,

The only issue is cost, but the Sharks are sucking it up and spending this year, good for them. Tightness to the cap could become an issue (it certainly is for the Ducks, who also seem content to blow their allowance), but for now, an impressive division and conference lead should be all that really matters.

So drink up, Sharks fans. Things are good.

The good news for us is we get a do-over next year, and maybe with a falling cap and other teams hogtied with big contracts.

Burke's parting gift, I guess.

As to your question, I celebrate after each win. But ... it's like waiting for someone to pull the rug from under me.

GO SHARKS!

Ian, I was serious. I just happened to be looking at the good side of Blake's bad play - that the guys around him are making up for his screw ups - hence, the positivity line at the end.

I don't blame you, since we have:

1. The top team in the West
2. High paying, recession-proof jobs
3. Large homes with stable home prices

As opposed to:

1. The Kings
2. Layoffs at LA Times, LA Unified, EA LA, Disneyland
3. Torrence
