Kings Gameday: Wait, the Kings Play Today?

Los Angeles Kings (3-4) vs. Detroit Red Wings (2009 Stanley Cup Champs)

7:30 PST, FSN West

-Jason Labarbera is playing fucking again today. I actually like it because I wanted him to get a chance to prove himself but give Eric Ersberg a chance, huh? Did Ersberg spit on Terry Murray's grave or something? (Because he looks like a corpse, you see.)

-Anze isn't looking that great to start the season. That's not bad. I've always found hockey to be cyclical: you feel great for a month, then you notice a little hitch that bothers you and it throws you off, then it seems like nothing is going right, and then all of a sudden you're fine again. The important part is that Kopitar is still being productive even though he's struggling. Both him and Frolov look like they're pressing a little bit, probably because they expected to be the leaders of this team, but they'll be fine.

-Detroit is a shithole.

Prediction: Kings win, 4-1, with dominant puck possession hockey while the Red Wings run around with shit in their pants. Now reverse the names on that.

Lombardi needs LaBabs to play well for a year or two so he will have trade value when Bernier is ready (unless he means to keep him as the backup). How do you focus when you know you are just a placeholder?

I don't know why, but I actually feel good about tonight's game. It's weird, because offensively, the Red Wings are better than the last time the Kings played them, with the only difference being Marian Hossa in place for Johan Franzen (different from our Johan Fransson).

Defensively, Stuart makes his return to Staples tonight, and I don't know what kind of reaction he'll get. But I somehow get the feeling that Brown will throw him into the boards at least three times. And Chelios is still out with a broken leg (or something), but I don't know who the 46-year-old's absence benefits more.

Meanwhile, in goal, we don't have to deal with Hasek, who retired. I still personally hold a grudge against Hasek because, back in 1999, when Luc Robitaille scored his 500th career goal on January 7, 1999 at the Forum against the Sabres, Hasek wasn't in goal. I was only eight years old, and my dad took me to the game because he wanted me to see Hasek in person. Remember, back then, he was considered the best goaltender in the league, alongside Ed Belfour and Curtis Joseph. Unbeknownst to him, Hasek had played the previous night against the then-Mighty Ducks, so the backup goaltender, Martin Biron, got the start.

Of course, Luc Robitaille scored two goals in the game off Biron, the second of the game and 500th career in the third period of the 4-2 win off a nice pass from Pavel Rosa (what the hell ever happened to him?)

It's doubtful Luc would've scored two goals in that game against Hasek, who had a 1.87 GAA and .937 save percentage on the season. So, while I was excited that I saw Luc's 500th career goal, I still am disappointed that I never got to see Hasek play in person before he retired. To this day, I've held a grudge against him and whatever team he was on. I guess, since he retired, I'll stick with the Red Wings and transfer my hatred to them, even though I'm glad they won the Cup last year because Crosby is an absolute douche-bag.

I seem to remeber silent bidding on a Hasek jersey at The Forum that night. Didn't come close to winning (I think it went for over $800).

I've never known the Kings to have offered a jersey of the opponent for the silent auction. How much did you place on it?

In 1999, at Kings games, the only jersey people would pay money for in an auction would be an opponents jersey.

I'll wait to see the Wings in Anaheim on Wednesday.

I think I bid $200. I really wanted a Miroslav Satan jersey, but no, there was only Hasek. The great thing is that Satan actually looks like Satan. Not that I'm a fan...

Shelly, your hockey photos are awesome. Always have been.

Well, like the Ducks I'm back from my trip too now. Tough pass last night from Gauthier, but I still have to approve, if for no other reason than I played Osgood over Labarbera in the one fantasy league where I have them both.

And what's up, Duckies? Road trip sweep? Sure, they've generally been ugly wins, but at this point, the only thing that matters is that the Ducks have been picking up two points per game, not really how.

Well, Audette was the Kings 2nd leading scorer that year... with 36 points.
