Dan Boyle is awesome (and a Shark)

I say "Dan Boyle is awesome" because that tagline was a running joke between me and Cheechew and some of our mutual friends for a number of years. I've always thought Boyle was a great player and secretly wished the Sharks would acquire him somehow.

And now they have. For (allegedly) Matt Carle, a first rounder, a fourth rounder, and a prospect. Details will be worked out later and made official. The Sharks also get Brad Lukowich in return.

More later on the salary cap aspect of it. This, along with resigning Christian Ehrhoff and Ryane Clowe, will put the Sharks over their self-imposed budget but not to the cap. I imagine Kyle McLaren will be waived soon.

Update: Here's part of the salary-cap answer. Craig Rivet was just traded to Buffalo for two second-round picks.

Your defense is now Dan Boyle, Rob Blake, Christian Ehrhoff, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Douglas Murray, Brad Lukowich, Kyle McLaren.

No way. Doug Wilson should now trade Rob Blake to the Kings, just to be a dick.

Fascinating stuff. I'm not terribly familiar with Boyle, but am exciting to see him joining the Sharks... and also wonder if he'll turn out to be a better defensive player than Campbell.

I completely agree that it's now time to big adieu to McLaren.

McLaren can be waived, but not for salary cap purposes. The buyout period is over. He either needs to be traded or sent to the minors.

Lukowich just said on a conference call that he is a veteran guy, one who likes to block a lot of shots and make a few hits even though he is not the biggest defenseman. He also said Dan Boyle is one of the most underrated defenseman he has ever played with, and that he was asked the same question about Boyle around 5 years ago.

I liked the trade when I first heard it. But giving up Wishart seems like a lot. He was one of our top prospects. Lukowich is a good replacement for Rivet at 1/2 the money.

I was selfish and wanted Schneider. I knew that would't happen last night after Blake (yack!) signed. Now I know I'll never see my guy on my team.

But, getting Boyle is pretty awesome. If only he can steer clear of the freaky accidents he has been having...

Now that we have a top defense. We need a top sniper. If you look at last years standings on the sharks nobody was consistant of putting the puck in the back of the net. Doug Wilson should trade Mclaren, Erhoff, and draft picks so that we can get a top line forward on this team. Without that we will not see a stanley cup for a while.

^Uh... what? First off, there's not a top sniper UFA available. Second, McLaren and Ehrhoff would be lucky to fetch a 2nd rounder for both. Throw in a 1st rounder, which the Sharks DO NOT HAVE in 2009, Third, having snipers doesn't guarantee success.
Stars outplayed the Sharks with guys like Morrow and Ribiero-- hardly, textbook snipers. Fourth, where's the cap room, huh?

The reason why Dallas outplayed the Sharks is because of Nabokov in the first three games he WAS NOT at his best. Another reason why is because they completely out-hit us. We need guys like Doug Murray and now Rob Blake to lay people out when they get the chance. But with trading Mclaren, Erhoff and possibly Setuguchi, we would get that extra cap space so that we could get someone is is consistant of putting the puck in the back of the net

Blake still hits?

Rob Blake is probably one of the best body checkers in the league.
