It's Not the Fall That'll Kill You, It's the Landing

The Kings reportedly offered a contract to Sandis Ozolinsh and he turned them down. If that's not bottom I don't know what is. That's it, right? Is Marek Malik going to come to my house and kick me in the nuts while screaming, "Anze Kopitar is inferior to Jonathan Toews?" I'm not sure I can take any more indignities. You may have noticed that I haven't actually written a whole lot about the Kings since training camp started, but what can I say? They still haven't signed a veteran defenseman, they're still below the salary floor, and Patrick O'Sullivan is still out of camp. The Kings had to kill a 5-on-3 this weekend and used Drew Doughty and Thomas Hickey to kill it. The scary part? They were the best options available because Greene and Johnson had just been out there. The Kings' defense is Bill Paxton in Aliens bad and there's not a person out there that's going to fix it. Bret Hedican or Adrian Aucoin or Andreas Lilja isn't going to prevent this team from sucking.

I'm coming around to the idea that the Kings are going to be very, very bad this season. Could someone hit me with their car and put me in a coma for a year so I can avoid this season? I'm not kidding.

Update: Whatever.

Hey, Khabibulin just got put on waivers!

I mean, he's gotta be better than what the Kings have got... right? Right???

Frankly, I wonder if the Kings shouldn't stay where they are in terms of D-men. Anyone remotely desirable is going to require a roster player or a future to acquire. The roster players on the Kings aren't too desirable themselves, except for a couple pieces that the Kings must keep for themselves. In terms of futures, well, the Kings need those too. The only way they're acquiring anyone is if its a salary dump, and really, its too late in the offseason to be doing much of that. McLaren really is the last option now, and after that, you're waiting till next year.

Ouch. That hurts.

For what its worth, I love Kings fans, and it kills me that the team doesn't love them as well. Of all the teams Mathieu has been on, those years on the Kings were my favorite (which is amazing considering I'm a Sharks fan).

The fans are 100% awesome. Y'all deserve so much better.

At least Doughty and Hickey killed that 5-on-3.

But when Ozolinsh turns down the Kings, I'm not sure it can get much worse.

Hey, you know how in baseball, the Cardinals converted Rick Ankiel to an outfielder because he sucked at pitching? Maybe the Kings could take Cloutier and make him a defenseman. That way, the Kings get a defenseman, a veteran, and the goals allowed aren't charged to Cloutier.

The silver lining could be Tavares.

I know it sucks thinking that this early, the Stemkos chants last season were anoying, particularly because they failed to get the top pick.

I could not read that article, but how much did they offer him? I know Schnieder would have loved to stay close to his Manhattan Beach home. Was there a reason Ozi was better than Schnieder? Because from what I remeber Ozi was not as good on the Ducks as Schnieder, but then maybe that's because he faced tougher minutes.

I couldn't read it either, but I think it said $800,000. I'm not sure if that was the Kings' offer or what Ozos played for last year, though.

There's no reason to think Ozolinsh has the abilities of a Schneider these days. Lombardi seems more concerned with salary than anything (talent, drug rehab concerns, the Kings' perception), though.

Seriously, they lowballed Ozolinsh (who may or may not be living in a trash can)? That's going to sell well with next year's UFA crop, I'm sure.

So now me thinks that the 4th round pick Lombardi refused to give up for Bryz, had more to do with Bryz's salary.

Kings need new ownership, I bet Lombardi's hands are tied. That would just suck if your a GM (or fan for that matter) in that kind of situation.

So what's Jere Karalahti doing these days? I mean, if he's not in prison or serving in the Finnish Parliament maybe he would come back. He must be younger than Schneider and Ozo.

There is no way in hell the kings are worse this year than last year. You can't take out a bunch of negatives (team pariah, horrible coach, lack of will to win) and not improve. Yeah, we are going to play Doughty, but is that really going to be that much of a downgrade from Blake (last year)? Cheer up, you downbeat shclubs.

Oh, I think everybody's in agreement here (or at least I am). Not many places to go from the floor except upwards.

But still, I don't think we're looking at a huge gain, and maybe when it's all said and done Kings fans may wish that the team actually did get worse results, ya know, for drafting and such.

cj: nah, Karalahti hasn't been in prison since late last year, and that was just detention before trial. He's playing in Germany's DEL, but I doubt they'd let him in the States as he's on a suspended sentence for financing drug smuggling. But I hear he has actually been clean and sober for a year or so, so he's doing fine by his standards.

Also Karalahti hasn't completed the NHL substance abuse programme, so he's still banned as far as NHL is concerned.
