Four more years of Jiggy

Ah, looks as if my favorite J.S. Giguere graphic will get a lot more play around here (and not from the Kings' guys).

TSN reports a four year, $24 M extension, and I gotta tell you, I'm pretty pleased with the result. There's still a lot of unknowns for the Ducks, but based on my gut feel, I like both the term and the salary on this deal (I had it in my mind that anything less than $6.5 M per year was a good signing).

Thanks, Giguere. We may never know what he passed up by signing this contract today and not waiting for a desperate team on July 1st, but I gotta think he would have landed somewhere upwards of $7 M per year, and he probably could have landed something in the 6-year range. Hooray for ambiguous savings!

So, what does this mean for the future of Ilya Bryzgalov? Stay tuned for further episodes of the Brian Burke show throughout the summer...

Giguere is definitely a solid goalie in the NHL, not quite top 5, but definitely top 10. I think 6 mil is a good deal compared to what he could demand on the market, but of course, Giguere coming back was the most sure thing of the 3, and I also felt that having Bryzgalov made him also the most easily replaceable of the 3.

As for Bryzgalov, he is clearly the best back up in the NHL. Giguere had some big games against Detroit, but I think Ducks could have won the Cup with Bryz at the helm. He has shown his ability to perform well in the playoffs and against good competition. I feel that giving up Bryzgalov for a good forward would not be beneficial, but it all depends on what happens with Selanne and free agency.

It's great that Jiggy has been signed. And for a good term as well. I do think Bryzgalov is going to get traded because of the signing of that new Swiss Goaltender who is supposed to already be able to play backup in the NHL. The Ducks need a good defensemen as there is only a guarantee of two returning at this point (granted it's 2 of the top 3, but only 3). I think if Bryz could be traded for a number 4 (if Scotty retires) or 5 (if 27 stays) defensemen and probably a draft pick, I think the Ducks are in really good shape. I'd like to see Huskins resigned, as it really seemed in the playoffs that he really started to get more comfortable and started to actually do things with the puck. I see potential there for. He can definitely be a solid 4 or 5 D-man in the NHL. And for number 6, they could either resign DiPenta or let some of their youth come in. I think the forwards are in pretty good shape. It'd be nice if the Ducks could pursue someone like a Chris Drury (Earl, I think if Drury came, you wouldn't be able to decide who you would love more - Pahlsson or Drury). I think that only happens though if both 27 and 8 retire. If only one of them retires, well we better hope Bobby Ryan is NHL ready.

Blasphemy. I know Drury's a favorite to many a hockey fan, but he's got two things that he's still got to overcome to earn my man-love:

1. Make me forget about Ted Drury.

2. Stop it with the little league already.

Frankly, I don't know who will be the one to ever take Pahlsson's place in my heart, but Drury is a real real real longshot.

I love that pic of Giguere and Roy. It really shows the impact that Patrick Roy had on the league and why he deserves the title of the NHL's best goaltender ever.

Earl, I think it's time to replace the sad face holding the Conn Smythe with the jubilant Jiggy holding the Cup.

omg!?!?!? how did they do this!?!?!? Helene Elliot and Sportnet said the Ducks were in cap trouble and wouldn't be able to keep him.

Lol.

This will only help Scotty come back--keeping the team together.

Damn straight it's time, though I might keep sad Smythe in there too--it really represents the best goaltending Giguere has ever provided (and that the Ducks had ever had).

It better be cheap enough, but I'm not really a Kariya hater like a lot of Duck fans are. I've heckled Selanne more than I have Kariya. (Though if I had to pick one former Duck to sign, I've still got a VISHNEVSKI jersey that's collecting dust.)

Oh, and Rick, play nice now. Had he decided to seek his market value, I think he would have priced himself out of my comfort zone.

But yeah, enjoy it.

what do you think of the new pick earl?

Well you could just add a third panel to the side, with Giguere holding the Cup, or holding his son (or that one cute one of him putting his son in the Cup), then put a second Giggy goaltending pic between panels two and three (to keep everything nice and consistent).
