Anaheim Ducks News Bits

According to the O.C. Register, The Ducks are going to place Bobby Ryan at a second line wing position this season, and let him fumble through becoming an NHL regular (as they should have done last season). The move is smart and will allow Ryan to become the great Ducks player he was drafted to be.

Signing Teemu Selanne is still up in the air... PLEASE TEEMU COME BACK!!!!
In the article Burkie also discussed getting rid of someone to free up space to go after Teemu and get under the cap.

"...Burke admitted the Ducks still need to rid themselves of a defenseman(nice way of saying
Mathieu Schneider) and said that it was possible that they’d get a winger in return", as quoted from the O.C. Register article above.

“It would have to come from outside,” Burke said. “We’re not going to force a young guy into that position.”

Burke is making moves (it appears) that look like Teemu's gone, so this sort of confuses me. Only time will tell, there's still a lot of offseason to be had.

I still refuse to worry, though. Every year it's seemed that there's no room to sign Selanne, but that Finn loves playing cheap.

As for Ryan, well that's good news (honestly I'm terrible at tracking the AHL; I had no idea his postseason stats were that good). I don't mind how he was up-and-down last year, but it is getting time for the guy either to emerge as an NHL regular, or get shelfed until after he signs his next contract (two summers from now).

If he is second-line material, that's pretty good. If the Ducks can manufacture a lineup where he's fourth-line material, call me silly but I think that's even better.

Why not replace one Finnish winger with another? Vote Schneider for Tukonen!

It sucks to be picked right after Crosby, but Ryan just hasn't panned out thus far. He never really looks right at this level, where the physical punishment is much higher. He can pass as good as anyone, I remember his saucer to Doug Weight last year, marvelous, but lets speed it up.

Jack Johnson, Anze Kopitar, Mark Staal, Martin Hanzal, Matt Niskanen, Steve Downie and Paul Stastny are some of the notables picked after Ryan.

Yeah, but I can't say that I'm that ruined by that list. If but for a lottery ball switch, that pick could have been Crosby, too.

Other than probably the first thirty games of last year, the team hasn't really needed Ryan to be a top-six forward. I'll wait until he establishes a regular role to really judge the pick.

I'm still undecided if he'll be that needed this coming year, even. There's certainly benefits to patience (unachieved bonuses and a cheaper contract in the future).
