Jumbo Joe signed that to help his team stay cap viable (kind of like Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin's twin contracts).

Even if that price tag is hefty, you can rationalize it as only paying market value for one of the two important contracts of this off-season.

I guess Center Ice will finally let me have an informed opinion of Kopitar :-)jamestobrienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16607553979777452973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27850362.post-86704022366048445072008-10-11T15:19:00.000-07:002008-10-11T15:19:00.000-07:00Is Kopitar really worth that coin when Thornton is...Is Kopitar really worth that coin when Thornton is making $7.2 million? It's my reading and not my math that needs work.

But, thinking about it, the Kings will only have $10 million in cap hits tied up in two of their key young leaders for the next several years, which means there's still plenty of room to give Jack Johnson his extension and to get other young players tied up while still having the wiggle room to sign a free agent. It also makes me wonder if we might see a Jack Johnson extension sooner rather than later.

All the same, it makes me a lot more excited about the first puck finally dropping tonight.Alexander Dubcekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02687830440483865198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27850362.post-87911855396848892232008-10-11T11:39:00.000-07:002008-10-11T11:39:00.000-07:00Hammond is reporting 7 years/$47.6 million, which ...Hammond is reporting 7 years/$47.6 million, which leaves an annual cap hit a hair shy of $7.1 million per year.

Rudy can't type numbers cleanly, so I fixed it. It's a good deal in the sense the Kings aren't paying close to a max contract, and it could be a great deal by the time it's done (or even by the time it kicks in, depending on what kind of a jump Kopitar makes this year) if he starts putting up 40-50 goals and 100-plus points a year, and keeps developing the other parts of his game as well.

Secretly, though, I had been hoping for one of those 15-year deals. Still, I'm going to be wearing my rookie-year Kopitar jersey for many, many years.Alexander Dubcekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02687830440483865198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27850362.post-30511514730798659682008-10-11T11:12:00.000-07:002008-10-11T11:12:00.000-07:00Good on DL for locking up the top line.
